If you are a Colorado native, you probably already know a lot about the Centennial State’s rich history thanks school history classes… but did you know that Colorado is home to one of the best-preserved dinosaur track sites in the world? Or that you can go to jail for picking a columbine? Or that… well, read on as we discuss these and other unusual facts about Colorado!
1. Colorado is home to one of the best-preserved dinosaur track sites.
Located in La Junta is that of Picketwire Canyon, where you’ll find 100 dinosaur trackways that you can actually walk on! (Please note: it is quite the trek, so bring lots of water and sunscreen.)

In order to protect our beautiful columbines, it is illegal to pluck and/or destroy any of these delicate flowers on public and private land.

Need numerical proof? At 53 square miles, Denver International Airport is a giant compared to dinky Manhattan (34 square miles) and San Francisco (47 square miles).
4. The street at the butt of everyone's jokes is actually the longest in America.
That's right; the 26-mile-long Colfax Avenue in Denver (the notorious home of prostitutes, cheap drugs, and Casa Bonita) is actually the longest continuous street in America!
5. Colorado may be home to the U.S. Olympic Committee's Olympic Training Center, but we are also the only state to ever turn down hosting the games.
In 1970, Colorado was awarded the bid for the winter Olympics, which we backed out of two years later after Denver rejected the funding for the multi-million dollar event.
6. Over the years, the ADX Florence SuperMax prison has housed such notorious inmates as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (the Boston Marathon bomber), Ted Kaczynski (the Unabomber), and Timothy McVeigh (the Oklahoma City bomber).
Note to self: Never visit Florence. (Sorry, Florence.)

Between 1969 and 2003, Dr. Stanley Biber was estimated to have performed 65% of the world's sex change operations.

How can we possibly have so many deserted towns in such a seemingly small area? See: Colorado mining era.

Just how large are we talking? The stone was 5.39 carats and sold at an auction for nearly $90,000!
10. You can send your Valentine mail to Loveland just to have it postmarked from the "Sweetheart City."
Think this is an unnecessary step to sending a letter? Tell that to the 160,000 lovebirds who do it annually!
11. Finally, in parts of Colorado, it is illegal to have dandelions in your yard, set your couch on the porch, or kiss a woman while she is asleep.
I can actually appreciate that last law... if I am asleep, you best not wake me for those shenanigans!
