If you find yourself traveling through Colorado, you are in luck, as there is no shortage of unique places to get out, stretch, and explore here in the Centennial State. From Mike the Headless Chicken to Cano’s Castle and the International Church of Cannabis, there is always something new to see and do in terms of roadside attractions, including the quirkiest place of all, the Lee Maxwell Washing Machine Museum:
Located in the small town of Eaton, the Lee Maxwell Washing Machine Museum is home to the world's most extensive washing machine collection, totaling some 1,400+ pieces of equipment.
Why washing machines? After retiring from teaching at Colorado State University in 1985, owner Lee Maxwell started collecting vintage washing machines, which he would then take apart, clean, and re-assemble.
Though he may be a retired electrical engineering professor, Maxwell is also the country's leading expert on vintage washing machines, all of which he shares with the public via his impressive museum collection.
In addition to nearly 1,500 washing machines, the Lee Maxwell Museum is also home to several other nostalgic tools, including retro refrigerators, vacuums, and butter churns.
Each tour of the Washing Machine Museum is entirely private and lead by Mr. Maxwell himself, who walks guests through not only his collection but the historical significance of the machine.
