Founded in 1880, St. Elmo was at one time a thriving mining town that during its prime housed over 150 patented mine claims and nearly 2,000 residents.

Even after the mines ran dry, the town continued to remain somewhat prosperous thanks to the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad laying their line through the town, making the area an important hub for supplies.

Sadly, many of the historic buildings (including the old town hall) burned down in 2002, but one of the spared structures was that of the old general store.

As per the store's website, "St. Elmo General Store offers a wide variety of antiques and souvenirs. Our antique line covers everything from fine china to yard art. We offer the best variety in antiques as well as the best deals around. We also carry a full line of souvenirs and t-shirts. Ice cream, drinks and snacks are also available."
