Nestled away in a valley below the San Juan Mountains, Lake City is - like so many other communities of its time - a former mining town that was once rich in minerals but quickly dried up and changed the trajectory of the newly formed town.

While many former mining towns' stories end there, Lake City's is just beginning as after the mineral boom came the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, which served as another major employer until the town finally turned to the tourism industry.
