Do you wish you could either live in or visit a place where everybody knows your name and are always glad you came? If so, small towns are the perfect place to be and, fortunately, Colorado is chock-full of some of the friendliest and most charming communities in the country! If you need a quiet and low-key oasis, however, we cannot help but recommend the small Colorado town of Rangely.
Located in the western Colorado Rio Blanco County, Rangely is a small town of 2,365 residents that is big in heart!
Inhabited by the Fremont Native Americans between 400 B.C. to 650 A.D., Rangely has a history as rich as the town itself, with oilmen coming to the area in the early 20th century and converting it into a successful oil camp.
Billed as being the largest oil field in the Rocky Mountain Region (with some 815 million+ barrels of oil, 406 producing wells, and 351 injection wells), oil is still the largest industry in town, yet there is even more to love about this quaint community.
Nestled amidst the high northwest Colorado desert's dramatic mesas, there is plenty to see and do around Rangely, including stunning hikes, fishing, camping, boating, and much more.
In addition to the incredible landscape, Rangely boasts a stellar parks and recreation system, golf courses, community gardens, street art, and museums.
