Now that warmer weather has arrived in Colorado and the roads are clear, it is time to gas up and enjoy the summer from the comfort of your own car. No matter where you drive in Colorado, you are guaranteed some pretty spectacular scenery, but do you crave something a bit more different and edgy? How about something – dare I say – dangerous? If you are ready to get out and drive, we recommend trying the scariest road in Colorado that will leave you shaking in your seat.
You likely know that Canon City is home to the haunted Colorado Prison Museum and petrifying Royal Gorge Bridge , but did you know that it is also the site of one of the scariest roads in the state?
Welcome to Skyline Drive; a scenic, one-lane road that boasts incredible 360-degree views… and zero guardrails.
Built by local inmates in 1905, Skyline Drive runs approximately three miles, beginning at U.S. Highway 50 and ending in a neighborhood just outside of the historic downtown area.
The old road may be terrifying at times, but if driven carefully, will reveal some of the most spectacular of views in Colorado.
In addition to the pristine landscape, Skyline Drive also holds a piece of important area history, as it houses an old dinosaur trackway with fossilized prints from a 107-million-year-old ankylosaurus.
Is the risk of driving this dangerous road worth the reward? You tell us!
Skyline Drive is open year round, but it is recommended to only use it during warmer months, as ice and snowpack can make it all the more dangerous.
