The Centennial State has a rich and fascinating railroad history, so anything we find something unique that honors this time, we cannot wait to share it! Today, it is this old Union Pacific roundhouse that is one of the most historic places in Colorado:
Located in Hugo, the aptly named Hugo Union Pacific Railroad Roundhouse is one of only 3 remaining roundhouses in the country from this once vibrant railroad.
Built in 1909, the roundhouse (and others like it) served as a maintenance area for Union Pacific and Kansas-Pacific lines and employed 200+ residents for several decades.
Sadly, when railroads began to decline, so did the Hugo Roundhouse, and by the early 1950s, the distinct building was converted into a hardware store and later used for storage.
In 1994 plans were submitted for a historic site designation, which became official when the brick roundhouse was placed on the Register of Historic Properties 3 years later.
Today, Roundhouse Preservation, Inc. is on a mission to "preserve for future generations the history of the American West and our railroad heritage" by restoring the roundhouse to its near original state.
Construction and restoration are still underway, but in the meantime, you can visit the area to admire the brilliant architecture and one-of-a-kind exterior.
