Life can get way too crazy, can’t it? While I personally love living in the city, there are times when I want to escape all of the loud noise, bright lights, and constant chaos, which is why I have a super secret place that I like to go… do you want to know where it is? Read on:
Located along the eastern part of the state is that of — you guessed it — the Eastern Plains; miles of wide open spaces that are (in my opinion) criminally overlooked!
Spanning hundreds of miles of land, the Eastern Plains house varying landscapes, including canyons, buttes, and forests, which make for an area that is not only serene but beautiful as well.
Pictured are the Pawnee Buttes; two large, 300-foot-tall buttes that are located within Weld County's Pawnee National Grassland.
In addition to being oh-so-peaceful, the Eastern Plains are also historically significant in that they were once home to Native American tribes and early explorers/traders, which can be seen in many of the area's small towns.
One place to explore Native American history? Visit the Paint Mines Archeological District, which is "a unique blending of geological, archaeological, historical and ecological resources."
Are you afraid you will get bored on the Plains? Nonsense, as eastern Colorado is home to such unique attractions as the historic Kit Carson Carousel...
Originally manufactured in 1905 for Elitch Gardens, the Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousel #6 (or Kit Carson Carousel) now resides in Burlington and still runs to this day!
...Limon Heritage Museum...
Native American history, trains, AND hands-on exhibits? The gang is all here at the Limon Heritage Museum!
...and must-see Purgatoire River Track Site.
Located in the southeast town of La Junta, the Purgatoire River Track Site (or Picketwire Canyon) is one of the largest dinosaur track sites in the country with more than 100 dinosaur trackways.
Need we even mention that the Eastern Plains' sunrises, sunsets, and nighttime skies are some of the most spectacular you will ever see?
