One of the many great things about hiking around Colorado is that you will never see the same thing twice, as nearly every trail features something different and one-of-a-kind! Case in point: this Colorado state park hike with a trail that winds around historic homes and buildings.
Welcome to Staunton State Park and the Old Mill Trail!
Located near Pine, the Old Mill Trail is a moderate .9-mile hike that follows an old path from the Staunton Ranch Trail to the remnants of the old sawmill, passing other ruins along the way.
While there is a lot to see while walking along the Old Mill Trail, the c. 1920s sawmill and nearby bunk house are the pièce de résistance, as they tell the tale of a more prosperous time for the area.
Also listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as the Staunton Ranch-Rural Historic Landscape), Staunton State Park began as a turn-of-the-20th-Century homestead, ranch, and logging operation that was later donated to the state for preservation purposes.
Like all great Colorado hikes, there is plenty of nature to enjoy along the Old Mill Trail, thanks to the gigantic, shady conifers and babbling brook.
Please note: While the trail itself is not steep, the terrain is rugged and can be hard to navigate.
