It is no secret that 2020 has been the craziest and most bizarre year ever, and it manages to keep getting stranger by the day, which has us all wanting to escape to… well, anywhere but here. Does this sound like you? If so, escape Earth as we know it by going far underground at the Underground Mining Museum in Colorado:
Located in Creede, the Underground Mining Museum broke ground in 1990 and began giving tours two years later. It has since welcomed an upwards of 25,000 visitors.
Unlike most museums, the Underground Mining Museum is not housed in a regular four-walled structure, but rather inside a solid rock cliff, which - surprisingly - was not an already formed mine but built primarily for the exhibition.
Consisting of some 600 feet of drift, the Underground Mining Museum is made up of 22 unique displays ranging from old-time mining tools and equipment to mannequins replicating miners working to photos and other artifacts.
In addition to the mine itself, the Underground Mining Museum is also home to a 3,500-square-foot community center that can be rented for weddings, reunions, and other special events.
The Underground Mining Museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day; the rest of the year, it is available by appointment only.
