Colorado is chock-full of small towns that you may have never heard of (which makes sense seeing as though we have 73 cities, 271 incorporated municipalities, and nearly 200 towns), which is why we here at Only in Colorado like to showcase a small community from time to time! So without further ado, let us check out this tiny southern Colorado town that will not only make you feel like you’re in another country, but in another WORLD:
Located in the beautiful San Luis Valley near the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve lies the small town of Hooper, which boasts an area of 0.27 square miles and a population of 100.
Established as Garrison, Colorado in 1891, the town was later incorporated and re-named in honor of a former Railroad leader by the name of Major S. Hooper.
Like the other towns in the area, Hooper is situated on dry and arid land with a stunning backdrop consisting of the glorious Sangre de Cristos.
Now, I know what you're thinking: you are wondering what makes this small and seemingly normal town so out-of-this-world, right? Well...
...Hooper is home to the one and only UFO Watchtower; a tall observation deck that boasts a 360-degree view of the San Luis Valley and no light pollution!
(Is it just me or does this place TOTALLY look like the house that Luke Skywalker lived in with his aunt and uncle in "A New Hope"?)
This must-experience Hooper attraction is is located 2 1/2 miles north of Hooper on Highway 17 and costs $2 per person (or $5 per car), offers campsites, and even hosts an annual Cosmic Highway Conference for those who just can't get enough of the paranormal.
