We have discussed historic Colorado restaurants numerous times and have even looked back on the state’s ties to the mob… but did you know that there is a connection between the two? Let’s discover them by visiting this historic Colorado restaurant with heavy ties to the mafia:
Located in Denver is the unsuspecting Gaetano's Italian Restaurant; a seemingly typical Italian restaurant that serves up killer dishes with a side of - err - killer founders.
Founded in 1947, Gaetano's was the brainchild of the infamous Smaldone family, who not only owned and operated the Highland establishment but also lead a life of crime around the Mile High City.
What types of crimes were the Smaldones notorious for? In addition to making one mean cannoli, the mean brothers ran booze for their dad to various speakeasies in Lower Downtown, operated a loan shark business, bootlegged, stole cars, and evaded taxes, which just scratches the surface of their criminal lives.
Today, Gaetano's is owned by restaurateur Ron Robinson and serves such unforgettable dishes as Butterflied Shrimp with a Moroccan Spice and Creamy Bucatini Pasta...
The restaurant is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Despite its decidedly dastardly past, Gaetano’s has definitely earned our trust as one of the most delicious restaurants in Denver. Have you visited this unique historical restaurant? If so, share your experiences with us in the comments below!
