Don’t ask me why, but for some reason the ghosts of centuries-old miners like to stick around/haunt the towns in which they once lived (no pun intended). Whether or not you believe in ghosts and the paranormal, you are sure to find the haunted history of this former Colorado mining town both terrifying and intriguing:
Famous for its ample casinos, fun festivals, and gorgeous surroundings, Cripple Creek is the Centennial State’s go-to for "Real Fun, Real Colorado."
Incorporated in 1892 as a mining town, Cripple Creek is home to its (still-open) namesake Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine, which turned out a whopping 23.5 million troy ounces of gold.
Despite being alive and well today, Cripple Creek was deemed a ghost town in the mid-1970s, after most of the unemployed miners and their families left the community. Despite this, the town gained traction once again in 1991, when Colorado voted that gambling be legalized in the area.
While this may seem wholesome enough, there is an allegedly dark side to Cripple Creek, beginning with the Outlaws and Lawmen Jail Museum (which is housed in an old 1901 jail and is said to be occupied by the spirits of former inmates and guards)...
...the historic Imperial Hotel (which is plagued with countless reports of both a ghostly man who follows guests down the stairs as well as the town’s famous woman in black)...
What do you think: Are the hauntings real or just really ridiculous? Before you decide, take in one of Cripple Creek’s famous Ghost Tours, which offers both more information and opportunities to “see” the spirits for yourself!
