If you have been around here for awhile, you know that we here at Only in Colorado love a good haunt… and what better way to experience alleged ghosts and spirits than by spending the night with them on a dark campground? If you know me, you know that I don’t camp (I watch way too much Dateline for those shenanigans)… and after hearing the accounts of campers seeing paranormal things near the grounds of the tragic Sand Creek massacre, I feel as though my fears are even more validated:

As you may remember from your high school history class, the bloody Sand Creek massacre took place on November 29, 1864, when nearly 700 men from the Colorado Territory militia (under the command of John M. Chivington) completely blind sighted the area Cheyenne and Arapaho Native Americans by ransacking their village and killing/mutilating somewhere between 70-160 men, women, and children. The slaughter of these villages changed the course of Colorado history, leading the haunting and historic location to be named a National Historic Site in 2007.
Today, those who camp in Kiowa County near the site have reported seeing apparitions of wandering men, women, and children in and around the grounds, some even screaming in pain. (Note: If this happens near the site, I don’t want to know what takes place ON the site—where camping in not permitted—at night…)
