Nestled within the White River National Forest, the Sawatch Mountains tower over the Continental Divide and the sublime Aspen valley, creating a bold photogenic backdrop to the region’s namesake treeline. But while you may have visited this lovely area before, you might not realize that the gorgeous views aren’t just off in the distance – there are some pretty “cool” sights to see right beneath your feet! You'll notice some large stones that seem as though they were just dropped out of the sky. These are called 'erratics' and are remnants transported and left behind by ancient now-melted glaciers. You'll also find miniature water basins that glisten in the sun.
However, it's also important to note that spring run-off season can make the waters of the creek higher and more powerful than usual - so be prepared to turn back.

The Grottos Trail is divided into three distinct areas, starting from the west end of the parking lot. But rest assured - this beautiful, popular spot is well-marked by signage!

You'll find well-maintained woodsy trails that lead to each of the trail's "main attractions." But keep your eyes open for other surprises as well! This is an all-seasons trail that has something to offer year-round.
The ice caves require a six-foot climb or so down through the narrow opening. Please be cautious!

We definitely recommend shoes with traction on your visit to the Grottos Trail, as the rocks in the area can be very slippery.
