Built in 1903, the Great Western Sugar Company was a thriving Colorado employer that during its heyday processed beets from over 7,000 farms in three states from within its 110,000-square-foot walls. Sadly, the historic plant — which made sugar from beets — closed in the mid-1970s and has since been one of Colorado’s favorite abandoned locations. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the mill is on private property and condemned by Boulder County Public Health (due to dangerous asbestos levels and unstable floors), it is hard to get a close-up look at this hauntingly beautiful piece of history, making these photos all the more invaluable.
