Beginning at the Cape Prince of Wales in Alaska and ending in the Andes of South America, the Continental Divide is a naturally occurring boundary that separates the continent’s river systems, with North America’s separating the water from the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic, Arctic, and the Gulf of Mexico. Since the Continental Divide is so geographically significant, many people try to travel it by foot or car, making Colorado’s portion a popular spot. Incorporated in 1880, Silver Plume is a former silver mining camp that is now part of the federally designated Georgetown-Silver Plume Historic District, which houses nearly 200 residents and the Continental Divide's highest point: Grays Peak.
