Few People Realize There’s An Active Volcano Right Here In Colorado
I don’t know about you, but when I think of volcanoes, I think of Hawaii, Pompeii, and basically every other place that is nothing like Colorado. Come to find out, Colorado IS home to an active volcano, which can you easily find whilst traveling across the Western Slope:
Located at the junctions of the Colorado and Eagle rivers, the Dotsero volcano is a 2,300-foot wide, 1,300-foot deep volcano that first erupted 4,200 years ago. Made up mostly of small scoria cones, Dotsero is hiding a collection of wood pieces which helped to date the volcano’s last explosion. In addition to creating the cones, the volcano also produced a nearly 2-mile-long lava flow, whose remnants can still be found on both sides of I-70. Known as being one of the youngest eruptions in the country, it is predicted that Dotsero will someday erupt again.
