The Mile-High City is known for its excellent beer, baseball, amazing outdoor concert venue and stunning scenery…but it’s also home to a few very strange attractions. Check out these seven weird places in Denver – you’ll never be the same afterward!
1. Biker Jim's Gourmet Dogs
Biker Jim's looks like a typical hot dog stand...nothing too crazy, right?
These aren't your run-of-the-mill hotdogs! Truly weird meat offerings include: rattlesnake, jackalope, wild boar, Alaskan reindeer and Southwest buffalo. People rave about these dogs, which you can dress in any number of interesting ways. Pictured: Alaskan reindeer and Southwest buffalo dogs. Find them at 2148 Larimer Street and Coors Field. They also have five hot dog carts, which you can spot around the city.
2. Denver Gorilla Run
This looks like your worst Planet of the Apes nightmare, but it's actually a charity 5k run. When you sign up, you order your gorilla suit (which you get to keep forever and ever!). This year's event takes place at the Westin Westminster on Saturday, October 22nd. Visit their
website for more information.
3. Cheesman Park
This 80-acre park holds a gruesome secret - thousands of bodies are haphazardly "buried" underneath the well-manicured grass. The area was once a cemetery, but in 1890 was converted to a park. Those who could afford to move their loved one's bodies did...but about 5,000 corpses were those of indigent or criminals. An undertaker named E.P. McGovern was contracted to move each of the bodies. In order to make a larger profit, McGovern used child-sized coffins and hacked apart the corpses - placing as many as three in each tiny coffin. When news organizations got wind of this travesty, McGovern was exposed and the city put a stop to the desecration...but it left the rest of the bodies where they lay and completed the park. Skeletal remains were dug up during the construction of a parking lot in 2008, and it's hard to say how many bodies lie beneath the grass and shrubs at the park.
4. Sensory Deprivation Tanks
This new trend in Denver is definitely weird. You climb inside the tank and float in water that matches your body temperature. It's dark, and your ears are also submerged, so all your senses are completely relaxed. Proponents swear by it...the claustrophobic maybe not so much.
5. Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys
This fun museum is weird...but also quite charming. You'll find everything from intricate dollhouses (pictured is a room from the Kingscote Mansion Doll House) to Star Wars collectibles. Some of the toys are only for display, but you can play with others! 1880 Gaylord Street.
6. Alferd Packer Massacre Site
Alferd Packer was a prospector trying to reach Breckenridge for the gold rush. He and five other men set out in February, during harsh winter conditions, but only Packer emerged two months later. Though he initially claimed that the others had frozen to death, eventually he confessed to killing and eating the others. Initially convicted and sentenced to death, his sentence was overturned and he spent many years in prison. The massacre site features a memorial to the five people Alferd Packer killed and consumed. Find it three miles south of Lake City.
7. National Velvet, Highland Bridge
National Velvet was created by artist John McEnroe and purchased by the city for $50,000. It's constructed of individual plastic shapes which look like balloons, kidney beans or internal organs, depending on who you ask.
