As we mentioned last week, Colorado is home to a whopping 42 state parks, 6 of which are located in or around Denver. While we love all 6 of these local outdoor treasures, we cannot help but gush about one in particular, which just so happens to also be the Centennial State’s newest state park:
Located in both Jefferson and Park counties, Staunton State Park is a nearly 4,000-acre park that showcases a number of different landscapes like dramatic cliffs, lush meadows, and even numerous bodies of water.
Opened in 2013, the original land for the park was donated to Colorado Parks & Wildlife by the late Frances Hornbrook Staunton, whose family homesteaded in the area at the turn of the 20th century.
After receiving the original land in 1986, the state acquired even more of the surrounding acreage, including both the gorgeous Elk Falls Ranch and Davis Ranch!
When you visit this new state park, you will find a number of exciting things to do, like hiking and biking amidst the colorful scenery, as well as camping, attending special programs, and even discovering different species of Colorado wildlife.
Staunton State Park is located at 12102 South Elk Creek Road in Pine and is open daily from 8 am to 8 pm. For more information on the park, campsites, and more, please visit the Colorado Parks & Wildlife’s website.
