If you are a Denver and/or Colorado native, there is a good chance that you are familiar with the Royal Gorge Bridge; one of the world’s largest suspension bridges that was also named one of the 5 Scariest Bridges in the U.S. by the Fun Times Guide . Want to learn more about this Colorado icon? Read on as we discuss this terrifying bridge near Denver that is sure to make your stomach drop:
Located a little over two hours from Denver, the Royal Gorge Bridge is a whopping1,260-foot-long, 18-foot-wide, and 1,292 planked structure that sits pretty at 955-feet over the Arkansas River.
Constructed in 1929, the Royal Gorge Bridge was built as a tourist attraction that can hold hundreds of visitors at a time!
Please note: Oversize vehicles (such as RVs and trucks) are prohibited at all times.
This Colorado icon isn't for the faint of heart; in fact, up until 2003, the Royal Gorge was considered to be the highest suspension bridge in the world, only to be beat out by China's Beipanjiang River Bridge (which stands at a gut-wrenching 1,201 feet high).
Like most historic Colorado attractions, the Bridge has seen its fair share of hard times, most recently via the 2013 wildfire that burned several of the bridges planks, in addition to destroying 48 of the park's 52 buildings.
(To get a better idea of the extent of the wildfire damage, here is an ISS image showing some of the bridge's burn damage, which caused more than $30M worth of repairs.)
In addition to "just" the bridge, Royal Gorge is also home to scenic rides along the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, as well as an amusement park chock-full of rides!
What better way to spend a weekend than by partaking in all that the Royal Gorge has to offer?!
The Royal Gorge Bridge is located at 4218 Co Rd 3A in Cañon City and opens daily at 7 am. For more information on the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, please visit their website .
