There is no shame in admitting this and an easy way to satisfy this craving, which is by taking this scenic and unforgettable hike through the Colorado countryside:

While we here at Only in Denver love hiking in and around Colorado’s majestic mountains, there is a whole other side to the Centennial State that is often overlooked, which is that of the rolling Eastern Plains. In addition to a healthy agriculture scene and historic sites galore, the Eastern Plains are home to a number of surprising hikes, like the pictured Pawnee Buttes Trail.

Located two hours northeast of the city, the Pawnee Buttes Trail is a 4.6 out-and-back trail that features wide open spaces, colorful wildflowers, and the pièce de résistance: the Buttes themselves!

Rising 300 feet over the surrounding Pawnee National Grassland, the Buttes are estimated to be some 23-million-years old and are comprised of a clay-rich sedimentary rock that has been gradually uncovered over time.

While the quiet countryside surrounding the trail is reason enough to hike this peaceful area, these geologic gems are truly the icing on the cake.
