Denver has become a popular place to move to for many reasons…the sunshine, the mountains, and the beautiful outdoors, to name a few. Those of us who have been around for a while can easily point out a newcomer to the Mile High City. From the way we dress (layers!) to the way we talk (always abbreviate the neighborhood), we can quickly spot someone who hasn’t quite settled into our way of life yet. Check out the list of 8 ways to spot a freshly transplanted Denverite below.
1. They don't understand the neighborhood names lingo.
If someone looks at you a little funny when you use the well-known two syllable neighborhood abbreviations, they're probably new to the area. Newcomers will soon know exactly where you're talking about when you mention RiNo, NoDo, LoDo, SoBo, and LoHi.
2. They can't wait to get to Casa Bonita to try the Mexican food.
Other than the sopapillas, the food at Casa Bonita isn't what will keep you coming back to visit...it's the entertainment. Where else will you view an indoor 30 ft. waterfall with cliff divers plunging into the pool below?
3. They don't own a bike yet.
Those who are new to Denver will soon realize that riding around on two wheels is the preferred mode of transportation here.
4. They get sunburned...a lot.
If the promised 300 days of sunshine each year is one of the things that drew you to the Mile High City, be aware that that same beautiful sun is also intense. You're going to want to invest in some sunblock.
5. They're always stopping to catch their breath.
It takes a while to get used to the altitude here. You can easily spot the newbies who are usually out of breath, even on a simple stroll.
6. They don't own a dog yet.
Here in Denver, it seems like everyone has a four-legged friend. Before you know it, you'll find yourself wanting a dog too.
7. They don't dress in layers.
Most days, the weather can be downright confusing here in Denver. May we suggest toting along a suitcase with a variety of clothing options for all weather conditions you may encounter (in a single day)?
8. They are going to get up really early to beat the traffic on I-70 to go skiing over the weekend.
You'll soon find them sitting in the "parking lot" traffic with their hands up in the air wondering what in the world is going on. Get used to it folks, you're not the only one hitting the slopes on a Saturday.
