The Mile High sunshine is extra radiant, the cherry blossoms and daffodils are out in all their glory…and so are the ice cream patrons. You can expect to wait in line for your sweet, creamy treats this time of year (especially on the weekends), but as you know, most good things in life require a little patience. And, believe me, in this case the reward is DEFinitely worth the wait. Much like Little Man Ice Cream , these seven heavenly ice creams in Denver are a dentist’s dream!
1. Liks Ice Cream
After biking and slacklining at Cheesman Park (and hopefully beer and pizza at Wyman's), you most definitely deserve some sugary sweets, and this family-owned, neighborhood biz has just the double-scoop chocolate covered waffle cone with sprinkles that you need. It's old-time ice cream parlor feel and mellow vibe make Lik a Denver staple.
2. Bonnie Brae Ice Cream
This family-owned Mile High icon has been churning out their fresh made ice cream on site since 1986. Their retro, mom-and-pop feel and decadent flavors will keep you coming back for more! How about some Blueberry Cheesecake, Cappucino Crunch, Kahlua and Cream, Deep Dish Apple Pie, or Snickers Delight?!
3. Sweet Cow
With five locations in and around Denver and another opening this summer, I'd say this local ice cream joint has earned a spot at the top. Sweet Cow prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients to great small-batch, handcrafted ice cream on site in clever flavor combinations, scooped up by their friendly staff. And don't miss out on their to-die-for salted pretzel cones, ice cream sandwiches, and floats made with Wynkoop's root beer (on tap)! Oh, and they're as passionate about the environment as they are their ice cream and use only recyclable and compostable products. A++ in my book!
4. Ice Cream Riot
I'm pretty sure I could eat my way through this ice cream spot and out the other side! Their insanely unique flavors are filled with nostalgic ingredients like Fruity Pebbles, blueberry Pop Tarts, Little Debbie oatmeal cream pies, and even cheddar Goldfish. Not to mention the massive, soul-sweetening Pop Tart ice cream sandwiches! They're sure to cause a riot!
5. High Point Creamery
Stop off at ParkBurger for some juicy beef, then "eat your heart out" at High Point Creamery. This husband-and-wife owned shop has flights of ice cream with sinfully luscious flavors like savory soft cheese and red pepper jelly, brown butter pecan, Corvus coffee, and tin cup whiskey with pistachio brittle. Their bold and unusual flavor combinations are something you've got to experience for yourself. (As is their authentic ice cream bombe.) Get some!
6. Sweet Action Ice Cream
What some call strange, others call adventurous, and that's precisely what this hip ice cream shop's flavors are. Stranahan's whiskey brickle, Colorado cantaloupe, honey jalapeño pickle, and roasted green chile are just a few of their ever-rotating, outstanding flavors. And for a little extra decadence, pair your scoop with a fresh baked cookie or waffle cone. Hooray for originality!
7. The Inventing Room
This aptly named dessert and ice cream shop is anything but traditional! Trained chefs use molecular gastronomy to take your sweet tooth experience to the next level. Munch on (complimentary) cinnamon chocolate nitro popcorn or Twizzler space foam, while chefs prepare your creme brulee crepes with strawberry ice cream or espresso waffle with maple. And just for the heck of it, you should probably top it off with their "really, really cold Cheetos!" The Inventing Room sets the bar high for an out-of-this-world sweet treat experience you won't soon forget!
I think I got a cavity just thinking about all the sweet, creamy dreamy goodness. Did we miss your favorite neighborhood ice cream shop? Let us know in the comments.
