The Nomadic Ute tribe were the earliest people to soak in these healing waters which they named, "Yampah" translating to "Big Medicine" because of the therapeutic qualities. In the early 1880s, Walter Horace, James Devereux, and a group of British investors purchased the Yampah Hot Springs as well as 10 surrounding acres. In 1888, the "Spa of the Rockies" was born.
