There’s something so awesome about grabbing a burger and beer at a mountain-town bar that has an interesting story behind it. Nestled in the mountains about an hour northwest of Denver, you will find the tiny town of Rollinsville which is home to a bar that is full of history and continues to thrive today.
The Stage Stop is is the only bar in town and is a well-known stopover for outdoor enthusiasts in the area.
The bar got its start in 1868 and can boast that it is actually older than the state of Colorado itself, which became a state in 1876. The Stage Stop's building was originally a toll stop (named Toll Gate Barn) for stagecoaches from Butterfield State Coach Company that were traveling through.
Over the years, this historic building has been home to a barber shop, grocery store, and boarding house. In 1962, it became Stage Stop Tavern and has been a bar ever since.
The mahogany bar is over 150 years old and was transported to Colorado by covered wagon from Liberty, MO.
Inside you will find a bright and inviting interior with unique artwork and signs found throughout.
After a day of adventuring in the mountains, the food served at Stage Stop with definitely hit the spot.
Traditional breakfast items are served along with special weekend brunch items like these lobster & spinach eggs benedict.
Lunch and dinner items include low-key choices like burgers, pizza, and a nice selection of "sammiches."
Stage Stop also offers many specials that you don't want to miss including their delicious Wall-eye Fish Friday.
The menu suits the appetites of a variety of guests offering steaks, pork chops, pasta, salads, and more.
What Stage Stop might be most known for actually happens upstairs in the historical hayloft.
On the second floor, you will find a second bar, stage, dance floor, and wraparound patio.
Stage Stop is known for their rich musical heritage that they keep alive with late night performances taking place most weekends.
This one-of-a-kind venue hosts the finest local, regional, and national touring acts and has shined a spotlight on several well-known musicians over the years (including The Beach Boys, Dave Matthews Band, Carole King, and many more).
As the sign outside the bar states ("Serving hicks, hippies, and bikers since 1868"), all are welcome to experience this little piece of history.
For a truly Colorado mountain experience, make plans to enjoy a meal and a little entertainment at the Stage Stop located at 60 Main St. in Rollinsville, CO 80474. They are open daily from 9 a.m. until closing.
