What could be a more perfect way to view the panorama of the town of Boulder below, than by sitting in a man-made outdoor living room.
Woods Quarry Loop Trail is a 2.9 mile hike that geology and rock lovers will particularly enjoy. It all begins in Boulder's backyard playground... Chautuaqua Park.
To begin this hike that will lead you to an abandoned rock quarry, you will follow the Mesa Trail.
When you reach an old stone cabin (which was a homestead up until the 1970s) turn right, heading up a short, but steep stair climb that takes you to the quarry.
The quarry sits on an open shelf below a cliff face that is scattered with rocks.
The quarry began excavating sandstone in the 1890s. This rock was used for sidewalks and buildings in Boulder at that time. In 1920, the quarry shut down because of more accessible competition in the area.
Take a seat on one of the half dozen hand-built chairs made out of native stone. These "recliners" are the perfect spot for taking in the spectacular view.
The Woods Quarry Loop Trail is a lesser known gem that does not experience heavy traffic. So you might even be treated to a little solitude while taking in the beauty that surrounds you.
