Tucked away in one of the liveliest and most historic areas of downtown Denver is the wonderfully quaint Market at Larimer Square, which has been a Mile High mainstay for nearly 40 years. Although skyscrapers and high-rise condo complexes have since replaced many of the historical structures in the area, the Market has steadfastly endured. The family owned establishment’s commitment to maintaining familiarity and consistency has earned them not only loyal customers, but also loyal staff who love what they do – and it shows. Next time you’re bustling around Larimer Square and are in need a reprieve, pop into the Market and treat yourself to a leisurely sip and a nibble.
"Locally Loved Since 1983," the Market at Larimer Square was bought and transformed by two brothers from New Jersey, who were dominating the coffeehouse and natural grocery store scene long before Starbucks and Whole Foods had sprung up on every corner.
Gary and Mark Greenberg were way ahead of the game, and the Market was actually home to the first espresso bar located between New York and L.A. (Hard to believe these days, but I swear to you it's true!)
The Greenbergs know that, "In a world where things just keep moving faster by the second, it is nice to know there is a place where you can sit down, take a breath, and be still-even if it’s just for a little while."
The Market prepares all of its food in-house, and on any given day, it boasts over 100 options of hot and cold dishes for your guilt-free and gluttonous pleasure.
This spring the Market was honorably selected by CBS.COM as having the "Top Veggie Sandwiches In Denver!" They offer about 10 different bread options (including gluten free) and a whole host of adventurous veggie combinations. But, never fear carnivores, they also have all of the traditional meat selections as well.
The Market partners with local and regional companies to bring you the best products available, such as Paleo Meals to Go, Hammond's candies, local honeys, hot sauces, and more. (And be sure to check their Facebook page for updates on product samplings held in-store.)
While Gary Greenberg has since passed, Mark and his faithful family and staff are keeping the dream alive and living by the motto that, "It is not what you say that makes one successful it is what one does. Maybe most importantly it is what one is." Love it.
"In a new downtown of sports bars and multiple TVs, it is The Market at Larimer Square with its classical music … eclectic clientele … it’s European flavors and steadfast adherence to history … that still captures the heart of this city and it remains, without question, one of Denver’s most endearing icons." (Painting by Keith Oelschlager)
