Many Denver residents are excited to see the neon sign at the Campus Lounge lit up once again. After a year of renovations, this Bonnie Brae neighborhood landmark recently opened its doors once again with an updated look and menu that will be the start to a new history for this old local watering hole.
This classic neighborhood dive originally opened in 1946 and was previously owned by DU graduate and former NHL hockey player, Jim Wiste. About a year ago, Dan Landes took over ownership and began a major overhaul of the building.
The new look and tastes of the Campus Lounge debuted on October 21.
The goal was to transform the Campus Lounge from a dark and smokey dive into an open, airy restaurant and bar with a throwback feel. This major overhaul included a complete remodel of the basement, installation of fresh bathrooms, and a new, open kitchen.
Two of the things that stayed the same will help keep the memory of the previous iconic spot alive; the wooden horseshoe bar and the neon sign out front.
The new menu features comfort foods with a twist and has an impressive selection of vegan entrees. It features a roster of rotating entrees, including a chile-relleno hamburger, adult spaghetti-o's or the KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) sandwich filled with a tempura Chicken thigh, Napa slaw, and sweet soy sauce.
Pair your meal with wine, a local draft beer, or a classic cocktail.
You can also start your meal with mouthwatering appetizers including Thai style duck meatballs, or re-vamped deviled eggs with Tivoli helles mustard, paprika potato chips, and micro greens.
You'll want to try their apple crisp made with pink lady apples and topped with a crispy cinnamon oat topping or the Scout Cookie (chocolate, sweet potato, coconut, and walnuts).
The changes to this beloved Bonnie Brae neighborhood dive can be experienced in person at 701 S. University Blvd. in Denver. Just look for the iconic neon sign all lit up and restored to its former glory. Check out the Campus Lounge’s website for more details.
