If you haven’t noticed, stores big and small are beginning to prepare for Halloween, meaning the spookiest time of year is only a few months away. Can’t wait to get your fill of scary haunted houses and slasher marathons on TV? Don’t sweat it; just visit one of these 11 Colorado locations where you may be able to spot a real ghost:
1. Imperial Hotel (Cripple Creek)
Legend has it that one-time Imperial Hotel owner George Long met his untimely death when he (under suspicious circumstances) fell down a flight of stairs. However, George can still be "seen" today groping women and playing the slots at the hotel.
2. North Middle School (Aurora)
One of the darker hauntings takes place at Aurora's North Middle School, where it is a said a girl who drowned in the school's swimming pool can still be seen roaming the halls.
3. Stanley Hotel (Estes Park)
No Colorado ghost sightings list is complete without the iconic Stanley Hotel, which has been plagued with reports of paranormal activity since the 1970s. Today the hotel is a favorite destination for both dignitaries and ghost hunters alike.
4. Garden of the Gods (Colorado Springs)
You would think that such a pristine spot like the Garden of the Gods could never be haunted, but alas... the vibrant rock formations are said to be in the same spot as an ancient Indian burial ground and that several visitors have not only felt an "eerie" presence upon leaving sections of the park, but have experienced unexplained car engine and brake issues whilst trying to leave.
5. Molly Brown House (Denver)
Several employees at the Denver landmark have reported dark shadows moving about the rooms, piano keys moving on their own, and the smell of fresh cigar smoke (Mr. Brown was an avid smoker)... In other words, the poor Titanic survivor just can't catch a break!
6. Hell (Fort Collins)
A place nicknamed "Hell" seems like the appropriate spot for a haunting... This abandoned Fort Collins goat farm lives up to its name with several reports of orb sightings and strange sounds. (Please note: This is not the actual Hell Tree, so use your imagination!)
7. St. Cloud Hotel (Canon City)
With reports of ghosts playing in the hallway, pranking guests, and stacking chairs up in empty rooms, I am going to say that the historic St. Cloud is indeed haunted.
8 Littleton Cemetery (Littleton)
Don't worry; I'm not here to tell you that famous Colorado cannibal Alfred Packer haunts his final resting place... however, Angelica, Packer's "medium" goat, does which may be even more frightening.
9. Central City Masonic Cemetery (Central City)
Surprise, surprise... it's another cemetery! Only this time, it isn't a goat; it's a young woman in a black dress leaving flowers on the grave of her beloved.
10. Cliff Palace (Mesa Verde National Park)
Truth be told, I'm surprised I haven't heard of this haunting sooner, as the stories of ancient Anasazi spirits roaming the premise actually make sense.
11. Buffalo Bill’s Grave (Golden)
There is no better way to end a list of Colorado ghost sightings than by mentioning ornery Buffalo Bill and the fact that a man resembling Cody has been seen wandering the gift shop from time to time...
