It’s the holiday season, and with all the flashy lights and catchy music comes the expenses associated with gifts, meals and travel. With that being said, are you looking to earn a little extra cash this Christmas? Great! Just go uncover one of these 10 Colorado treasures:
1. It is said that the Musgrove Corral Treasure, which contains gold and silver coins, was buried somewhere along the Cache la Poudre River.
2. A large cache of treasure is thought to be buried somewhere in the stone cliffs above the Purgatoire River near Las Animas.
3. Another cache of gold, valuing $10,000, was allegedly buried in the Pat's Hole area of Dinosaur National Monument.
4. Eight loads of 50 lb. gold bars, commonly known as the Arapaho Princess Treasure, is said to have been buried at the foothills of the Spanish Peaks in the early 1800s.
5. Legend has it that when Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch hid in the valley of Brown's Hole (known today as Brown's Park), they abandoned some of their treasures, including $50,000 in gold coins and nuggets.
6. Head to Devil's Head Lookout, kick around some dirt, and glance between the crevices, as there are numerous tales of treasure caches in the area.
7. More than $30,000 in silver coins remain buried somewhere in Colorado's Irish Canyon.
8. After a stagecoach was robbed of $60,000 in $10 and $20 gold coins, the outlawed thieves were thought to have buried the loot somewhere near Virginia Dale before being shot and killed.
9. A wagon train containing new dimes from the Denver mint is said to have disappeared somewhere near the Gunnison River toward the north rim of Black Canyon.
A few of the wooden kegs containing the coins were recovered, but several remain unaccounted for.
10. In 1919, a 105-year-old woman told a forest ranger about a mysterious Three Steps Mine, with an entrance marked by a Maltese Cross.
The cave, which is filled with gold, has yet to be rediscovered.
