20 Moments Everyone Born In Colorado Will Always Remember

Since becoming a state in 1876, Colorado has seen its fair share of ups and downs, triumphs and tribulations. That being said, if you lived in the Centennial State anytime over the last 60 years, there’s a good chance that you’ll always remember:
1. The first television broadcast out of Denver. (1952)
The station was KFEL-TV, which today is KWGN-TV Channel 2.
2. The plutonium fire at the Atomic Energy Commission Rocky Flats Plant. (1957)
Not only did the fire contaminate the plant, but Denver air as well.
3. Adolph Coors III, heir to the Coors fortune, is murdered during a botched kidnapping. (1960)
The murder led to the international manhunt of Joseph Corbett, Jr., who was later arrested in Vancouver.
4. A flash flood on the South Platte River kills 28 and causes damages of $500M. (1965)
5. Denver is selected to host the XII Olympic Winter Games. (1969)
6. The entire world holds its breath after an oxygen tank explodes on the Apollo 13 flight to the moon. (1970)
The crew, which included Denver native Command Module Pilot Jack Swigert, made it back safely four days later.
7. Colorado voters deny a $5 million bond issue to fund the 1976 Winter Olympics, resulting in Denver's withdrawal.
The games were eventually held in Innsbruck, Austria.
8. The U.S. Supreme Court orders Denver Public Schools to desegregate in Keyes v. School District No. 1. (1973)
9. A flash flood in Big Thompson Canyon kills 143, 5 of whom were never found. (1976)
10. "Mork and Mindy," which is set in Boulder, debuts on ABC.
11. Set in Denver, the prime time soap opera "Dynasty'' debuts ABC. (1981)
12. The body of 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey is found in the basement of her Boulder home. (1996)
13. The Denver Broncos beat the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. (1998)
14. The Denver Broncos beat the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII. (1999)
15. Two Columbine High School students open fire at their school, killing 12 students and a teacher and wounding 24 others. (1999)
16. The Colorado Avalanche beat the New Jersey Devils and win the Stanley Cup.
17. President-elect Barack Obama accepts the party nomination at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. (2008)
18. The nation sits on pins and needles when news of "Balloon Boy" breaks. (2009)
The story out of Fort Collins was later ruled a publicity stunt.
19. A gunman opens fire at a midnight screening of the "Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, killing 12 and wounding 70. (2012)
The Aurora Theater Shooting was the largest mass shooting in number of casualties in U.S. history.
20. Colorado voters approve Amendment 64, which legalizes possession of small quantities of marijuana. (2012)
