If you have ever traveled east on I-70 toward Kansas, there is a good chance you’ve passed one of Colorado’s greatest treasures without realizing it. Today, I will be telling you about this small town of just over 4,000 and why everyone in Colorado should visit.
Founded in 1888, Burlington was a small town that was established during the construction of the Rock Island Railroad. When plans to become a junction for multiple railroads didn’t pan out, the town became a major hub for agriculture. To this day, Burlington farmers produce some of the largest quantities of corn and wheat in the state.

Originally manufactured in 1905 for Elitch Gardens, the Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousel #6 was sold to Kit Carson County in 1928 after Elitches acquired a more modern carousel. During the Great Depression, both the carousel and band organ were put into storage, only to reemerge and be put to use in 1937. Restoration efforts for the stunning, hand-carved animals at this designated National Historic Site have been ongoing since the mid-1970s.
The Carousel isn’t the only historic gem in Burlington! The recreated early 1900’s Old Town features 21 fully restored buildings (including a working soda fountain, jail, and manor house), can-can dancers, shops, and several hands-on opportunities.
