Colorado’s hiking trails are world-famous and there are countless routes to choose from. You can summit epic mountains, explore amazing rock formations, follow beautiful rivers, and loop around pristine lakes, but if you’re looking for an adventure that’s short, stunning, and stomach-dropping, there’s one bridge walk that you should definitely check out.
Welcome to the Royal Gorge Bridge; the highest suspension bridge in the United States.
At the time of its construction in 1929, the Royal Gorge Bridge was the highest suspension bridge in the entire world - an impressive title that it held all the way up until 2003.
The bridge spans 1,260 feet across the incredible Royal Gorge and sits 955 feet above the rushing Arkansas River below.
Of course, the bridge has undergone a good deal of construction and expensive renovations over the decades to make sure it remains sturdy and stable. It may look scary, but crossing the bridge is completely safe. In fact, it’s strong enough to support the weight of both people and vehicles.
