Colorado is home to more stunning drives than we can count, but with so many of them in the mountains, many are deemed dangerous and undrivable for a good portion of the year. Are you ready to experience one of these roads without all of the weather-related hazards? Then now is the perfect time to drive Monarch Pass:
Located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Monarch Pass is a stunning stretch of road that passes over the Continental Divide via Highway 50.
Sitting at an elevation of 11,312 feet, Monarch Pass is considered one of the most breathtaking drives in the state, thanks to jaw-dropping views as far as the eye can see a la the Sawatch Range.
With high elevations and - in the case of Monarch Pass - a 7% grade, this stretch of road can be downright treacherous in the winter months, making late spring, summer, and early fall the best time to safely enjoy the drive.
While the views are reason enough to drive Monarch Pass, there are a few stops along the way that make the trip even more memorable, including a shop and restaurant on the summit!
