Have you ever imagined visiting the top of the world and taking in all of its amazing sights and smells? You can do so right here in Colorado! Okay, so maybe it isn’t quite the top of the world, but with its jaw-dropping views and impressive elevation, the Alpine Loop National Back Country Byway sure does feel that way:
Spanning 65 miles of the gorgeous San Juan Mountains, the Alpine Loop National Back Country Byway covers truly Only in Colorado landscapes that can be enjoyed from the comfort of your car or ATV.
Rated as moderate, the Alpine Loop National Back Country Byway winds through some of the best backcountry roads in the state, passing through endless wildflower fields, forests, and high alpine meadows.
Since it is situated in the San Juans, drivers will also be treated to 365-degree bird's eye views via the 12,620-foot Cinnamon Pass, 12,800-foot Engineer Pass, and 12,650-foot Stony Pass.
Thanks to the area it is in, you are guaranteed to hop on the Byway in a historic mining town and hit many others along the way, including Silverton, Animas Forks, Lake City, and Ouray (pictured).
When you plan your drive, it is recommended that you set aside 2 or more days, as not only is the suggested drive time 7+ hours, but there is plenty to see and do in all of the towns and atop each peak.
