It is no secret that the Centennial State is home to some of the best small towns in the country, but did you know that we also boast one of the best historic cities? If you love discovering charming new communities and have an interest in local history, you are going to love the quaint town of Leadville, Colorado.
The votes are in and USA Today's 10 Best has just named Leadville as one of the 10 Best Historic Towns in America (based on both history and populations of fewer than 35,000 people)!
As per USA Today, "History is alive and well in Leadville," citing the 1879 Tabor Opera House, Matchless Mine, and original Victorian-inspired downtown area, adding that "mining district's original headframes and mining equipment bring alive the Silver Rush days."
Originally settled in 1859, Leadville is a former mining town that produced everything from gold to lead to silver, and - at its most profitable peak - housed a whopping 30,000+ residents.
In addition to mining, Leadville was the epitome of an Old West town, thanks to a cast of colorful characters that included the likes of Alice "Poker Alice" Ivers (pictured), iconic gunslinger Mart Duggan, Doc Holliday, and the "Unsinkable" Molly Brown.
Once the area ores ran dry, Leadville became quieter and quieter, but still houses a few thousand residents and much of the same late 1800s/early 1900s architecture, making it a favorite for tourists and history buffs alike.
While the original architecture is reason enough to visit Leadville, the former mining town also boasts a Historic District complete with museums, old homes and businesses, and mining structures that can still be toured.
As if you needed another reason to visit this charming small town, Leadville is also home to ample shopping and dining opportunities, making it the perfect weekend getaway!
