The Centennial State isn’t known for its beaches, but it should be! Sure, Colorado is landlocked, yet we still have plenty of beautiful lakes and sandy shores that you will want to visit time and again, including this one incredible seasonal beach that was just named one of the best in America:
Running through the Great Sand Dunes, Medano Creek is a seasonal stream and beach that begins flowing in the early spring (typically early April), peaks in June, and then disappears for another year come August.
How does this natural phenomenon occur? It is thanks to the snowfall and runoff from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains which impact the stream's annual flow.
According to Travel + Leisure - which made its list based on such factors as the sand and waves, level of seclusion, and activities - there is more to Medano Creek than just its beauty, as it is also an ideal place for "wading in the water, tubing, skimboarding, and building sand castles."
In addition to Medano Creek, Travel + Leisure also notes Coronado Beach in San Diego, Clearwater Beach in Clearwater (Florida), and Carlsmith Beach in Hilo (Hawaii, pictured).
