Colorado is home to more stunning roads than we can count, so it should come as no surprise that a few of our drives were just named some of the best in America! Can you guess which roads they are? According to MSN , they are the aptly-named Highway of Legends and the Silver Thread Colorado Scenic and Historic Byway:
"When going far isn't an option, a road trip is just the ticket, allowing plenty of opportunities to discover incredible places closer to home," begins MSN's Scenic US road trips to discover this year , which named the Highway of Legends as their second-best pick (just behind the A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway in Florida, pictured).
"Ancient indigenous myths, checkered pasts of Spanish conquistadors, and troubled lives of gold prospectors are all part of the fabric of the land that surrounds this scenic byway in southern Colorado," teases MSN, which also notes the Highway of Legends' gorgeous landscape and historic sites.
Spanning 82 miles, the Highway of Legends (or State Highway 12) runs from La Veta to Trinidad and passes through the stunning Spanish Peaks Country, plus little-known spots like the former coal-mining town of Cokedale (pictured).
While the recommended driving time is 2 hours, we recommend setting aside even more time, as there are plenty of interesting stops to make along the way!
In addition to the Highway of Legends, MSN also paid tribute to the lesser-known Silver Thread Byway.
As per the publication, "The roadside remains strewn with abandoned mining structures and other remnants of decades gone by, leaving clues of what life would have been like in these rugged parts," adding that "There are plenty of natural wonders to take in as well."
Spanning a longer stretch than the Highway of Legends (at 120 miles), the Silver Thread Colorado Scenic and Historic Byway came in at #9 on the list, as it runs through the Lake City and Creede historical districts, plus dazzling, virtually untouched scenery and landscape.
For this drive, be sure to set aside even more time to explore, as there are many towns and old mines along this must-drive trek.
