Colorado is known for its beautiful hikes and trails, but did you know that several of these historical paths are also historically significant? To get an up-close look at one of these incredible hikes, make plans to walk Western Colorado’s Bridgeport Trail:
Located a mere 30 miles from Grand Junction, the Bridgeport Trail is tucked away inside the 200,000-acre Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area and 66,280-acre Dominguez Canyon Wilderness.
Like most of western Colorado's landscape, the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area and Dominguez Canyon Wilderness comprise canyons and bluffs dating back some 600-million years; unlike other places, the area is also rich in intricate petroglyphs.
To get the best view of the landscape and ancient rock carvings, we recommend taking the 7 to 14-mile (depending on how far you wish to venture) Bridgeport Trail!
Deemed moderate (due to both the length and elevation), the Bridgeport Trail is truly a gem of a Colorado hike as it winds through canyons, around rivers, under a bridge, and to the petroglyphs and archaic rock shelters.
Keep your eyes peeled, as thousands of petroglyphs hide along the trail.
You never know who (or what!) you will see along the Bridgeport Trail!
To learn more about this unique area, please visit the Bureau of Land Management's website .
The Bridgeport Trailhead can be accessed by going 20 miles south of Grand Junction on Hwy 50 (toward Delta), turning right on Bridgeport Road, and following the dirt road for 3 miles to the trailhead.
