If you live in Colorado or have been following the news, you know that housing prices and the overall cost of living in the Centennial State is astronomical and that trying even to find a house is next to impossible. Is there any hope for those of us who don’t make over $1M a year (or do not want to incur massive amounts of debt)? It turns out there is, as affordable housing is still a thing in these four Colorado counties:
Do you dream of owning your own home but cannot come up with the funds to purchase something $650,000+? Don't sweat it, as according to a 2020 report from the National Association of REALTORS , there are still a handful of places where you can get a house for less than $100,000, including:
1. Crowley Country
Located in the high southeast plains, Crowley County is a small and friendly county that is home to approximately 6,000 residents and affordable housing via such communities as Ordway, Crowley, and Sugar City. How affordable are we talking? According to the aforementioned report, the median home price is approximately $83,000, which equals a monthly mortgage payment of around $310.
2. Baca County
It doesn't get any more peaceful than Baca County, which is located in the southeast corner of Colorado and houses Two Buttes, Campo, and Springfield. What does this peace and quiet cost? Around $88,000 (give or take), with a monthly mortgage payment of only $326. We don't know about you, but we can get on board with all of the above!
3. Bent County
Coming in just below Baca County (in terms of price), Bent County's median homes cost $85,500 or $316 a month. Why choose to live in Bent County? There is plenty to see and do around this beautiful southeast county, including the John Martin Reservoir State Park, Santa Fe National Historic Trail, and other historic sites like Bent's Fort.
4. Kiowa County
Last but certainly not least in counties with affordable housing is Kiowa County, the 5th-least populous county in Colorado with a population of 1,500. Also located in southeast Colorado, the median home cost in Kiowa County is $91,300, which is the most expensive on the list but still affordable, thanks to a monthly payment of only $338.
