J.B. Weisenfels has lived in rural Arkansas for three decades. She is a writer, a mom, and a graduate student. She is also an avid collector of tacky fish whatnots, slightly chipped teapots, and other old things. In her spare time she enjoys driving to the nearest creek to sit a while. If you were to visit her, she'd try to feed you cornbread.
If you’re a small town Arkansan, don’t worry. I’m not actually going to reveal all your secrets. I’m a small town gal myself, and I’m not even going to reveal my secrets. However, there’s something that needs saying, and that something is that we’d prefer tourists and city folk continue to hang out in places where lots of people are already hanging out. There are some places in our small hometowns that we’d rather keep all to ourselves and not even our fondness for hospitality can change the fact that we’d prefer not to share them. Below you’ll find 10 secrets we’re all keeping.
1. The very best swimming hole just outside of town.
Sometimes an Arkansan just needs to sit beside a lake or a creek or a river, and we’d rather not have our moments of peaceful reflection interrupted. It’s not personal, we’d just rather not be interrupted by anyone.
We’re happy to see our favorite family run businesses meet with success, but we don’t want our favorite spots constantly busy. It makes it harder for us to sit wherever we want when our favorite server says, "Sit wherever you want, darlin’."
I’m not saying that making too much barbecue decreases the quality of the barbecue, I’m just saying sometimes the value of fabulous pulled pork seems to increase the more secret it is.

9. The incredible underrated state park that most people haven’t discovered just yet.
There’s an underrated state park in every region of the Natural State, which means there’s one near our small town homes too. This picture, for example, is definitely not White Oak Lake, which is totally not at all incredibly dreamy and you should never, ever go there.
Nana has never met a stranger, so she’d never turn away a hungry newcomer, but frankly we’d rather not share our Nana with just anyone.
