I am a nature lover and self-proclaimed foodie wrapped in one package. In my previous life, I was an Accountant, but numbers were boring and writing is the only thing that fuels my soul. So, I write because it's my freedom...it brings me joy. When I'm not writing dope articles for OnlyInYourState, I am writing and editing articles for my online blog on Medium.com. Or, when I get the chance, I am off on a trip with my family chasing waterfalls, or simply exploring the great outdoors. My mantra is to always find the best part of every day and bask in it.
The Natural State never ceases to amaze me. And it’s easy to see how Arkansas got its nickname because we are surrounded by immense natural beauty. From high above the mountain tops to the river valleys below, there is no end to the gorgeous scenery. The breathtaking landscapes throughout Arkansas could be plucked from the canvas of any famous nature painting. That’s especially true for Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge in Turrell, where the waterways along with the cypress hardwoods shine in all their glory. Come with us as we explore the stunning Arkansas landscape inside this wildlife sanctuary.
Described as a “wildlife oasis in an agricultural sea,” Wapanocca NWR is surrounded by stunning bottomland hardwoods, a scenic lake, grasslands, as well as old-growth cypress swamps.
Located 15 miles outside of West Memphis in the Arkansas Delta near the mighty Mississippi, the 5,500-acre refuge serves as a sanctuary for migrating and wintering waterfowl, turtles, along with other reptiles.
...or perhaps float the scenic cypress swamps marveling at the awe-inspiring beauty. During the fall, the color contrast between the autumn hues and the green murky water is a breathtaking nature scene that could easily be plucked from a painting.
Not to mention if you're able to witness the refuge from the air, you'll be blown away by the stunning Arkansas landscape. The kaleidoscope of colors inside this hidden gem is truly a sight to behold.
Any nature lover or artist will be inspired while exploring this haven because there is beauty around every turn. So, be sure to have your camera to capture gorgeous masterpieces for your collection. This water lily is simply breathtaking!
If you visit during the spring, you'll find pretty little wildflowers dotting the landscape. While there are no towering bluffs or mountains inside the wetlands, you'll be able to appreciate all that it has to offer. Nothing beats immersing yourself in nature while surrounded by its melodious sounds.
Of course, the Wapanocca Lake is perfect for anglers as its packed with catfish, large bream, and more. If you're not an angler, we recommend bringing your kayak or canoe, to spend the day exploring the gorgeous scenes inside this natural stunning oasis.
So, what do you think about this wildlife sanctuary? Do you agree with us that it’s a stunning Arkansas landscape that could be plucked from a famous nature painting? Sound off in the comments below. To learn more about the refuge, visit the Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge website.
If you visit the area, here’s another hidden gem in Arkansas that we recommend. Of course, you’ll need more than one day to explore both places, so we found a great hotel in West Memphis where you can spend the night.
