The weather has officially gotten colder, the rainy days have arrived and it won’t be long until we’re ready to see some snow in Arkansas. However, winter weather is nothing to fear here. Of course, if you’re one of those last-minute people like me and happen to get caught up in at least one snowstorm on the road, (I was headed back from Judsonia to Little Rock in that blast of winter weather we had back in February 2002) at least you’re in for an interesting drive. Otherwise, there’s not much else to do than kick back and watch nature’s show.
11. You have more of an excuse to stay inside and do nothing.
No one can say you're lazy when there's a legitimate excuse to not drive anywhere. Didn't go to the gym? It was snowing. Didn't shovel the walk? It might snow again or melt. Just chill. It'll all take care of itself.
10. You get to break out the warm and fuzzy reliables.
All of those clothes that have been stored away throughout spring, summer, and fall are now relevant again. Hopefully they still fit. Layering is back in, and scarves aren't just for fashion. Winter clothes are in attics and closets across Arkansas--and it's time to break them out if you haven't already.
YAY SNOW DAY! If you're a kid with a day out of school because of snow, you're happy. If you're a pre-schooler enjoying a day out in the winter wonderland and building a snowman, it's even better.
Arkansas and winter and photography--they go together so well. When we get a good snow here in the Natural State, it's time for the cameras to come out.
If you dare brave the roads on a winter advisory day or night in Arkansas, at least you're in small company. Given the opportunity to drive in winter weather here, you'll find cars parked in driveways, lots, and even on the side of the road at times.
Cold weather means warm comfort food in the kitchen. Once the winter weather gets colder around Arkansas, stew pots and soup spoons are regular kitchen staples. Soups and chilis become favored comfort dishes.
Arkansas winter festivals are a great time of twinkling lights and family fun. Usually we don't worry about snow, especially when these holiday festivals take place. Attending the opening of these festivals is a great time when the weather's on your side.
It's happened before and it can happen again; we can actually have an Arkansas Christmas with snow. Whenever we get this treat, our state landmarks look amazingly photogenic.
When it's snowed too hard to bus into school or drive to the office, you've got plenty of time to spend with family. Going out for a stroll in a winter wonderland with a family member is a great way to celebrate winter in Arkansas.
A stroll out in the snow is just the right thing to do when you don't feel like taking a vehicle anywhere else. Plus, you'll get a good workout during your winter walk when a snowball fight likely starts out of nowhere.
1. It's not that bad. The state's just underprepared.
Comparatively speaking, the snow we get in Arkansas isn't as bad as other states that are used to deep banks of snow on an annual basis. However, our state remains unprepared for a true blizzard--and we still find entire towns shutting down whenever snow covers the road. That's perfectly okay with kids who prefer buses not to run after a night of snow.
As long as you’re careful, there’s nothing to worry about in the winter months ahead of us. Enjoy as much of the season as we can when it begins–especially if we do get a good snow. That’s snow as in ‘actual snow’, not those nasty ice storms that come around every now and again and just make everything miserable. Those ice storms, yeah, those aren’t something to rejoice over.
