Arkansans are often stereotyped into one group, but there are several different divisions of Arkansas natives! These cultural distinctions between Natural State residents only serve as a reminder that Arkansas is full of many different types of cool and unique individuals.
7. Razorback Fan
This Arkansan is a die-hard loyalist for them Hogs. Razorback Fans will attend any game in Fayetteville or Little Rock and usually be the loudest and proudest at a tailgate party.
6. City Folks
You know who they are...the Little Rock dwellers, the Fayetteville denizens, the proud folk of Bentonville, Conway, and Jonesboro - these Arkansans are used to a Walmart 5 minutes from their front door and at least five gas stations and fast food restaurants within close driving distance. These are the Arkansans who often boast about their great phone reception.
5. Country Folks
Though they can't brag about the best cell phone reception, the good country people of Arkansas are happy to claim a view of some of the Natural State's best scenery from their own back door.
4. The "Enlightened" Arkansan
Usually a younger resident of the Natural State, the "enlightened" Arkansan has friends who attend schools out of state & happily takes every opportunity to remind everyone of how everyone from "around here" is SO behind the times compared to their buddies in San Francisco or New York City. These Arkansans (who consider their grandma's handmade quilts to be such kitschy & hip wall hangings instead of actually using them on a bed) are usually the first to see a surge of state pride after returning home from abroad and seeing the cost of living in the more "enlightened" US cities.
3. The Uppity Arkansan
Everybody knows this Arkansan because this Arkansan is related to everyone you know...and they know your relatives and can trace their genealogy back to the Civil War era where their ancestors were big cotton people and enjoyed mint juleps with the sons and daughters of General So-and-So. These Arkansans are often found wherever their picture can be placed in local society magazines. Sure, we might giggle a little at the highbrow Arkansan, but make no mistake - these natives are experts when it comes to giving. Local charities thrive from the big hearts of the big-money Arkansans.
2. Just Plain Folks
The most abundant type of Arkansan, these good people run the gamut from your church friends to your drankin' buddies. These Arkansans are the ones you call when you want to have a good time or need to move a couch - they're always there for a friend or a good time! These Arkansans are best enjoyed with a plate of barbecue, a sunny summer day, and lots of jokes to tell.
1. The New Kid
Often found among either the "city folks" or "country folks" crowd, this Arkansan hasn't quite made his way up to being Just Plain Folks yet because he's still trying to figure out either how to navigate the Big Rock Exchange or the quickest way to get from Ash Flat to Star City. Give him time, bless his heart. He's an Arkansan now.
Of course, this is all tongue-in-cheek. It’s very difficult to paint an Arkansan with one brush of the same color (usually red); the Natural State’s natives are so diverse and wonderfully eclectic that this article represents only a small fun sampling of the people you’ll meet in Arkansas!
