There doesn’t seem to be a busier time than when summer winds down. Even if you’re not taking kids to school or attending classes yourself, there’s a certain bustle that just can’t be avoided. If you’re needing a quiet escape there’s a natural area along the east side of the state that’s the perfect getaway. Don’t be fooled by the name, Seven Devils Swamp outside of Cominto is a nature lover’s paradise. Let’s take a peaceful paddle around this Arkansas wildlife area and enjoy the chance for reflection.
Seven Devils Swamp may not sound like the most pleasant of places but it's actually a rather nice day trip.
A couple of different urban legends surround the name of the area. The most common story line involves a hunter seeing seven devils instead of seven lakes. In spite of the folklore, the area is a peaceful paradise. For directions to Seven Devils Swamp, use this map.
The areas marked paddle trail is fantastic way to tour this unique swamp.
The best thing to do is simply mark the boat ramp in your GPS and paddle around the swamp. The cypress and tupelo trees make you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere but using a GPS and following the markers will keep you from getting lost.

You can expect to see all sorts of critters along the trail.
Birders in particular will be delighted with this area since Seven Devils Swamp does have an active bald eagle nest. An assortment of herons as well as anhinga (also known as water turkey) live in the area, too.
The state park is about 35 miles away from the swamp and offers up to Class AAA camping as well as cabins. For directions to Lake Chicot State Park from Seven Devils Swamp, use this map.
