You can accuse an Arkansas native of many things, but you’ll never catch anyone from the Natural State performing any of these activities – that is, unless no one’s watching or you’ve run into an Arkie who’s learned a few new tricks from traveling here and there! Many Arkansas natives are set in their ways and don’t see themselves changing what’s not broken, so don’t expect to see anyone from here doing these things!
You can certainly get a taxicab in Arkansas to take you from point A to point B, and you can even stand on the streets of downtown Little Rock and hail a cab, but it's rare you'll ever actually find someone on a busy workday yelling out for a Yellow Cab while trying to get back to the office. Most Arkansans use their own vehicles (whether independently or carpooling) to travel and taxicabs are booked in advance by phone when needed.
Arkansas children can get rowdy when left to their own devices, but the vast majority of kids around the Natural State are pretty good about showing respect to their elders. There's a reason why - many Arkansas parents (especially those of the "old school" variety) are not shy to let others correct their children's bad behavior on sight. As a result of this, you'll find a lot of Arkansas residents aren't as patient with misbehaving unattended young people!
Little Rock's busiest tourist spot is also known for its difficult parking situation. Those who work or live in the River Market are required to have permits to park in the various lots around the area, and trying to park your vehicle three or four blocks from all the great River Market destinations you want to visit can get frustratingly awkward very quickly.
You'd better stock up on Saturday or you're out of luck! Arkansas alcohol laws are very strict and somewhat unique. All alcoholic beverages are sold in retail stores rather than state-owned package stores. In most areas alcohol is not sold on Sundays, but restaurants can be the exception. Alcohol is not sold on Christmas Day. Arkansas also has a tier system for alcohol licensing that determines when the bar or restaurant can serve alcohol.
Out of towners get corrected very quickly (or perhaps even busted) when mispronouncing the state's name. Sorry, but you can't get away with "Ar-kansas" or "Arkan-sass" around here. It's "Ar-kin-saw" or bust! There's nothing personal about being corrected, either - the Natural State natives just respect their home state enough to always properly enunciate the name.
There aren’t many things that an Arkansan will flat out refuse to do (we ain’t scared!), but these things are just unusual in the world of Natural State natives. Leave a comment on things you think Arkansas natives usually DO get caught doing or what you wouldn’t do when in the Natural State!
