She loves exploring the trails around the Buffalo National River and has yet to find a waterfall that wasn't her favorite.
Some overlooks like Artists Point or the peak of Mt. Nebo are well-known treasures. Others, like today’s feature, are well-kept secrets. It may not have quite the grandeur of hiking a mountain, but the McClure Amphitheater sure is a lovely little spot for a picnic with a view. Let’s bring a camera and head to this beautiful spot on the hill.
The McClure Amphitheater is a rather underrated spot on the east side of Fort Smith.
You may have visited for a church service, yoga class, or even a wedding. It's also used as a meeting point for local cyclists and hikers. Or, maybe you've never heard of the spot at all. Regardless, this area is well worth a stop.
Address: 6400 Massard Road, Fort Smith, AR 72916
The amphitheater was rededicated in 2011, but the history goes back much further.
The spot was originally established in 1953 by Colonel George W. McClure and his troop. The amphitheater was intended to be used as a spot for map reading as well as church services for Fort Chaffee.
It's easy to make this into a full afternoon of fun by taking the family over to the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center. Take the trails to walk to the center or continue driving down Massard Road. The nature center has all sorts of educational exhibits, outdoor play equipment, more trails, and fishing at Wells Lake.
Address: 8300 Wells Lake Road, Fort Smith, AR 72916
This little spot on the hill is perfect if you're wanting a quiet place to enjoy the sunset.
Whether you're joining others for an event, taking the family on a simple but fun day trip, or just want a quiet place to reflect, the McClure Amphitheater is one of our favorite not-so-secret spots in Fort Smith.
