Everyone knows and loves the Oark General Store, after all it is the oldest general store in the state. However, we thought today would be a good day to shed some light on one of our other favorites in the state – the Gilbert General Store. Whether you’re planning a Buffalo getaway or just like poking around well preserved Arkansas history, this fantastic general store is well worth a trip.
Of course one of the neatest old buildings in Arkansas would be found in Gilbert.
It is the coolest place in Arkansas, after all. This particularly cool Gilbert place is located within ear shot of the Buffalo National River at 1 Frost St.,Gilbert, AR 72636.
A bit off the beaten path in the beautiful Buffalo River territory, resides a hundred-year old building that will take you back in time.
The Buffalo Camping & Canoeing is always a bustling place but something about this old building makes folks take things a little slower. We promise you'll have a newfound desire to sit on the porch and spin a yarn.
The general store was originally built as two separate buildings in 1901 and 1906, each with its own storefront. The stores were later combined and owned by the Mays-Baker families. In 1983 the Mays General Store was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Until the mid-eighties the store was also the local post office. Today the place is simply known as the Gilbert General Store.

See the original post office boxes in the corner of the store or check out the numerous knick·knacks around the place that date back to its early days.
You'll want to send a postcard home before you've even taken your Buffalo trip.
