I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
With day trip options galore, you’re never too far from adventure in the Grand Canyon State. You can always visit a small town, one of the many state parks or forests, a lake or a river, or even archaeological sites. The S’edav Va’aki Museum in Phoenix, for example, is a unique archaeological site in Arizona that’s perfect for a day trip.
The Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park was renamed the S'edav Va'aki Museum on Mar. 23. 2023. "S'edav Va'aki" translates to "Central Vahki," which is a large platform mound preserved at the site.
The spelling comes from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community known as the O'odham.
This museum is the 'Gateway to Phoenix Heritage," with its mission to preserve the cultural history and heritage of the city through education, exhibits, and its archaeological site.
Designated as a National Historic Landmark as well as a Phoenix Point of Pride, the S'edav Va'aki Museum has 2/3-mile accessible trail that leads visitors through its archaeological site.
This archaeological site was once inhabited by members of the Hohokam. Here you'll be able to view a large platform mound (the "Va'aki"), a ball court, and replicas of housing.
These artifacts and the information provided give great insight into the Hohokam who had lived here. Kids can learn from the hands-on gallery here as well.
The museum also has its own gift shop where you can purchase Native American gifts, art, and jewelry. Come to the S'edav Va'aki Museum to explore and learn for the day!
The S’edav Va’aki Museum is located at 4619 E Washington St. in Phoenix. Have you ever visited this unique archaeological site in Arizona? If so, what did you learn from your visit here?
